AI is advancing at an unprecedented pace. you either embrace it or get left behind.
Recently, Elon Musk sold X.com to his own company, xAI, in a $33 billion all-stock deal, boosting xAI’s valuation to $80 billion.
Why did he do this?
I spent some time analyzing it, and I believe the primary reason was to leverage X’s vast public data to train xAI’s models more effectively, which is powering their chatapp grok.
Timeline & Roadmap Changes:
2022 - Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion, aiming to transform it into an “everything app.” However, the vision did not fully materialize.
2023 – After parting ways with OpenAI, Musk founded xAI, which quickly gained traction with AI developments like the Grok chatbot.
2024. - he was busy in politics :)
January 2025 – He expressed interest in acquiring OpenAI for $100 billion, but failed. He was one of the early founders of OpenAI and sold his stake back in 2018. He proabably realised that he has made a mistake of leaving openai.
March 2025 – He sold X to xAI, likely intending to merge the two platforms. By integrating X’s massive public data with xAI, he aims to build more advanced, real-world AI models while leveraging X’s global audience.
April-2025 - OpenAI raises $40B funding at a valuation of $300B - a move he had anticipated before and he beefed up his plan.
Why This Merger Matters to Musk:
X’s Total Active Users: ~1 billion
Monthly Active Users (MAUs): ~650 million (as of early 2025)
Daily Active Users (DAUs): ~250–300 million
Leading AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic spend billions acquiring data from external sources or rely on publicly available internet data. However, they lack direct access to first-party user data at scale.
With this merger, xAI gains exclusive access to X’s massive first-party data—at zero cost and without any external approvals. This gives Musk a significant advantage, allowing xAI to train and refine its AI models much faster than competitors, positioning it to directly challenge OpenAI and other top AI firms.
My Key Takeaways:
Adaptability: Musk is known for his bold vision and leadership, yet he has changed his plan from making X ‘a super app for everything’ to an AI company. This shift underscores an important lesson: don’t be rigid in your roadmap. When a better opportunity arises, be willing to adapt and evolve.
The AI Revolution is Real: I once thought AI was overhyped, but it looks very real. I can sense it by looking at what’s happening at the top AI companies and a few startups being built on top of an AI platform. Ex: cursor, perplexity, richpanel, Truewind, remy, magicloops. If you’re not adapting to the AI-driven world now, you risk becoming irrelevant in the next 3 years.
